Ani Espriella was born on the edge of the Carribbean Sea in the beautiful old colonial city of Cartagena, Colombia. Born of an American mother and Colombian father, her family moved to Miami, Florida when she was a young child. There, she grew up in a rich, latin flavored multi-cultural city that has greatly influenced her work.

Despite getting a master's degree in English Education, most of her adult life was spent singing lead for a popular South Florida Band, Pangea. You may even remember her as a finalist in the 1994 Star Search, a backup singer for Gloria Estefan, or lead singer for popular Brazilian artist Sergio Mendes on his album, Arara. It is from her musical roots that she is inspired to paint musicians doing what they love most.

Ani married a native of Boulder in 1998 and fell in love with Colorado, realizing what a wonderful place it was to raise her two children. She moved here in 2003 and needing a creative outlet, began oil painting. She studied under noted landscape painter Jake Gaedtke for four years.

Ani loves painting in oils because of the richness and bold color she can achieve with the medium. Her affinity toward warm reds, golds and browns can be seen in much of her work. Ani also enjoys using palette knife along with brushes in many of her paintings, as she is drawn to the interesting textures it creates. These techniques are evidenced in her recurring themes of musicians, and people and places of different cultures.
